How It Works

This tool evaluates JSONPath expressions against your JSON data entirely in the browser. JSONPath is a query language for JSON, similar to XPath for XML. It lets you extract specific values from complex JSON structures using path expressions.

  • Root $ — every expression starts with $ representing the root object
  • Dot notation $.key — access properties by name, like JavaScript dot notation
  • Bracket notation $['key'] — alternative property access, required for keys with special characters
  • Recursive descent .. — searches all levels of the document for matching keys
  • Filters [?()] — select array elements that match a condition using @ to reference the current item
  • Wildcards [*] — match all elements in an array or all properties of an object

Common Use Cases

  • API debugging — extract specific fields from large API responses
  • Data transformation — pull values for mapping or filtering
  • Configuration — query nested config files for specific settings
  • Testing — validate JSON response structure in automated tests
